3 Common Roadblocks to Conception

by Stephanie Berman

Fertility issues plague many families and they leave couples on a lifelong search for answers. In many cases, infertility is not caused by a medical issue. Instead, it is due to a behavior or a product that is used that can stand in the way of getting pregnant. When that is the case, simple changes can be made in order to improve the chances for conception. Every couple needs to look at the roadblocks for conception and see if there are any obstacles standing in their way.

Lubrication is one roadblock to conception that is incredibly common. Many couples use lubrication during intercourse, and instead of doing their research, they simply pick one of the popular lubricants on the market and use it. What they do not realize is many of the popular lubricants decrease sperm motility. When sperm motility is decreased, the chance of getting pregnant is also decreased. In many cases, people use lubrication they think is safe because it does not have a spermicide in it. However, studies have shown that simply avoiding spermicides is not enough.

Sandra Fryhofer, M.D., the Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine, stated, "Even if your lubricant doesn't contain a spermicide, it may contain other ingredients that can be toxic to sperm." Fryhofer went on to say many popular lubricants interfere with sperm motility, but there are lubricants on the market that are fertility friendly and do not interfere with motility. It is important for couples to use such lubricants so sperm motility will not be affected.

Another common roadblock to conception is weight. Women who are overweight or underweight can have trouble conceiving, and in many cases the fertility issues are not resolved until the woman gets near an ideal weight. In order to have a natural hormone balance, one must be close to their ideal weight. Weight alters the production of hormones, which in turn makes it much more difficult to get pregnant.

Keep in mind, a few extra pounds is not going to keep most women from conceiving. However, when extra weight starts to add up, there can be a problem. In addition, when a woman is drastically underweight, she can have a problem. In both cases, the menstrual cycle can be affected, as well as the overall health and hormonal balance of the woman. That is why it is suggested women start to get in shape before they try to have children. This will make it easier to conceive and it will also make the pregnancy easier.

Alcohol is another common roadblock to conception. In regards to alcohol, it can affect both the man and the woman. For men, chronic alcohol abuse can cause impotency and lack of interest in sex. In most cases, if men have sexual related problems that are caused by alcohol, it will be very obvious. However, for women, the problems are not always as obvious.

Women face a variety of alcohol related problems. According to a study published in the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism titled "Alcohol's Effects on Reproductive Function," alcohol has many adverse affects on the reproductive system of women. Alcohol can cause irregular menstrual cycles, absence of ovulation, and total infertility. It is important to note even women who only drink a small amount of alcohol can experience some of the problems.

Each woman is different, and each woman is affected by alcohol differently. Some women can drink small amounts of alcohol without any serious effects, while others simply cannot tolerate alcohol. In most cases, though, heavy alcohol consumption will have an adverse effect on the female reproductive system.

In many cases, fertility issues can be solved by simply changing certain products and behaviors. Lubrication, weight and alcohol consumption should all be examined if a couple is having difficulty conceiving. In many cases, simple changes lead to conception.

Say it Isn't So - Caffeine's Effect on Getting Pregnant

by Emma Wize

Could there be a better way to start your day than a nice hot cup of espresso? Well, when you're pregnant or trying to get pregnant there are MANY better ways to start your day. In fact, for women already nurturing a new life within, the caffeine in coffee and other drinks can actually cause harm.

I know this may be difficult to digest. You've changed your diet in so many ways already. No more sushi, your favorite tuna salad is a no-no, the vintage bottle of red from your trip to France is collecting dust in the cabinet. But now your coffee??!! Not to deepen this emerging wound, but it's not just your coffee.

Caffeine is found in amounts that aren't acceptable for a pregnant woman and her baby in a number of products. Tea, energy drinks, colas and.... this is a tough one ....CHOCOLATE all contain amounts of caffeine that have the potential to harm your developing fetus.

While it's not conclusive that moderate amounts of caffeine decrease a woman's fertility, perhaps we should be using our 'trying to conceive' period to wean ourselves from caffeine because its effects are proven to be more of a concern once a pregnancy is established.

During the early days of pregnancy, it's normal to worry about miscarriage. Statistics show that many early pregnancies end in miscarriage, though most occur before we even know we're pregnant. But once we shake off that little pee stick and see the big, pink plus sign, it's a daily struggle not to worry about doing everything right to ensure that our pregnancy remains viable. A lot of it is out of our hands - nature has a way of overriding our wishes sometimes. BUT, there are things that we should, and shouldn't do, to keep Mother Nature on our side!

A recent study has placed a direct link with caffeine consumption and miscarriages. In fact, the research project concluded that women who had consumed amounts of caffeine equivalent to what's found in two cups of coffee each day (about 200mg) had twice the risk of miscarriage as those who consumed no caffeine. Whether the woman drank two cups of coffee or consumed equivalent amounts of caffeine in tea, energy drinks, sodas or ....yes...chocolate, her risk of miscarriage remained twice as high as a woman not consuming caffeine.

There was also a small increase in risk of miscarriage for women consuming less than 200mg. I know it can be hard to understand how a seemingly harmless drink can have such a disastrous effect on a fetus. But while we might rely on the jolt to kick-start our day, fetuses can't metabolize caffeine and it may actually disrupt cell development and decrease blood flow from the placenta. This reduction in blood flow can result in miscarriage.

So, as difficult as it may seem to limit your daily java - or tea, or soda, or.... CHOCOLATE, pregnancy goes by in a flash and I know you want to do everything you can to give your baby the optimal growing environment.

10 Best Tips for Getting Pregnant

by Sally Moran

The following are what I have found to be the best tips for getting pregnant. These tips on getting pregnant should help you and your partner conceive more quickly.

1 - Avoid smoking, drugs, alcohol, and caffeine.

2 - Exercise at least 30 minutes 5 times per week, preferrably doing something you enjoy. Walking is a great exercise as well as swimming or aerobics.

3 - Intercourse timing - Know your ovulation dates and have baby making sex in the days up to and including your ovulation day. If you just have intercourse whenever you feel like it, you can still become pregnant, but it's better to focus on the best times to get pregnant in order to get pregnant faster.

4 - The best sexual position for conception seems to be the missionary (man on top) position, although there are plenty of other positions in which women have gotten pregnant. This position gives the sperm a better chance to reach their destination - the awaiting egg.

5- Eat a well-balanced fertility diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. Also, drink plenty of pure filtered water daily, at least 6-8 glasses.

6 - Take a good multivitamin/multimineral prenatal supplement that includes at least 400 mcg of folic acid per daily serving.

7 - Utilize fertility herbs to help boost your chances of getting pregnant more quickly. Some helpful herbs include maca, spirulina, red raspberry leaf, and nettle.

8 - Relax and enjoy the time you have with your mate and try not to be too structured in your time together.

9 - Lose weight if your BMI is 25 or greater.

10 - Don't forget about the male partner and the potential for male factor infertility. Sperm health is vital for a couple to conceive more quickly. Have a sperm analysis done to assure that male infertility is not an issue. The male partner should be taking just as much care with his diet and habits as the female partner.

Getting Pregnant - How Long Will it Take?

by Tehmina Mazher

Have you decided to get pregnant? Do you have any idea how long will it take? Whatever your answer is, it is probably based on what you know from your families, friends or any information you may have gained from books, television or internet. Therefore, to some extent, problems of 'infertility' are self-defined by our expectations.

Some couples have to wait 15 years for getting pregnant, while other couples are surprised if a baby is not conceived within the first month of trying. Most specialist medical services have defined fertility problems but a simple definition will not work for every couple. For getting pregnant a number of factors are involved.

Age: Clearly, your age will affect your view of the situation. If you are in 40's, you will be aware of your declining fertility. If you are determined to have a baby, then you will investigate whether there is a problem as your chances of getting pregnant are decreasing. If you are in 20's and leading a very full life, you may be quite willing to wait for a few more years before you decide that there is a problem.

Readiness To Have A Family: However, whatever your age is , if you are absolutely set on having a baby, then you may see every period that arrives as an unexplainable failure. Many women expect to get pregnant from the first month of trying. Often in a couple one partner is more uncertain about parenthood and therefore may take much longer to be willing to identify a problem.

Gynaecological history: Other factors may also affect your view of your potential fertility. If you have a history of any gynaecological problems, a previous sexually transmitted disease, a previous termination of pregnancy or a previous miscarriage or stillbirth, any of these factors may increase your sense of anxiety if conception does not occur immediately. For most women these anxieties are unjustified and may be the result of guilt about some of these past experiences. However, it may be that you need to discuss your particular situation with your doctor to sort out the fact from the fear. Clearly, a number of highly individual factors will contribute to you viewing yourself as having a problem and it is always worth discussing these feelings with someone you trust. A visit to the doctor might be appropriate for you but it does also represent the first step in identifying a 'problem', which can increase your anxiety about the situation. Everyone's expectations are different.

As you go through Getting Pregnant. and choose various options that are available to you, you'll learn more about what could be causing you and your partner a delay in getting pregnant and find a solution to finally fix it so that you can start knitting baby booties sooner.

Getting Pregnant While Taking Birth Control Pills

by Kyle W Bumpus

So you're on the birth control pill but still uneasy about getting pregnant. "Just how effective are these things?" you ask. "What if I use it incorrectly and get pregnant anyway?" Sadly, it's very possible. Here's what you need to know about how to get the most out of your chosen birth control pill of choice.

Theoretically, both the combined (estrogen/progestin) and mini (progestin only) birth control pills are over 99% effective - if used correctly. That's a very big "if," however. In practice, most women make mistakes occasionally and so the actual effectiveness rate is only around 95%. There are two common types of user error that can lead to pregnancy.

Starting Late

The most common error women make using the pill is starting their next cycle one or more days late. If you start your next cycle one day late, take two pills immediately and then one pill per day after that. If you procrastinate even more and start two days late, take two pills for each of the next two days and one pill per day after that. If you really drop the ball and are three days or more late starting your next cycle, it's probably too late for this month. You should immediately switch to another form of temporary birth control and call your doctor for instructions. It's possible you'll be fine depending on the particular pill you're on, but better safe than sorry.

Skipping A Day

Another common error women make while on birth control pills is forgetting and accidently skipping a day. If you miss one day sometime during your cycle, immediately take the pill you missed and continue with the rest of your cycle as planned. This may mean you have to take more than one pill in a day. If you miss two pills in a row any time during your cycle, take two pills the day you remember and two the next, continuing with the rest of your cycle as normal. If this happens, however, you should definitely use a backup form of birth control just to be on the safe side, because you are at risk.

Mistakes while using the pill are not uncommon. The first thing you should do is switch to a backup form of birth control or refrain from sexual intercourse entirely until you're caught up. Of course, only your doctor can advise you on whether or not it's safe for you to take multiple pills in any given day, as there may be adverse hormonal side effects.

5 Things a Woman Should Know About Getting Pregnant After 30

by Helen Denise

As Founder of MaybeMOM, I’ve worked with many doctors to gather accurate information to help women over thirty plan their families and avoid the fears and complications that often accompany attempts to either have children now, or determine when the best time is. Let me share with you these tips for women over thirty:>

First a woman over thirty does not necessarily have ovulation every month. Let me remind you what ovulation is. It is the process of an egg ready for fertilization leaving the ovary follicle for the abdominal cavity. The ovulation cycle may last from 5 to 8 days, while ovicells are being formed.

The problem is that the estrogen level in a woman’s body, at this period of her life, is not enough to produce a full ovulation process. Nature offers many similar situations. For instance, an apple tree can break into blossom, but does not necessarily produce apples.

Second, many women erroneously presume that as long as they have regular menstrual cycles, there is going to be no problem conceiving a child. Actually, regular monthly menstrual cycles do not necessarily mean a woman has regular ovulation cycles. Ovulation cycles vary with age – as a result of disease, or because of a wide variety of other reasons. Ovulation cycles, normally stable for any woman, may vary for two or three months after an abortion, or for a year after giving birth to a child. After a woman becomes forty, her body starts getting ready for her pre-menopausal period. So, ovulation may take place at any moment of a menstrual cycle or several times during a cycle. Some women get pregnant even while having a period.

Third, If you do not have an ovulation cycle for more than ten months, and if your pre-menopausal time is far away, you should see a doctor, as the absence may be caused by hormonal disorders in your body, and medical advice is indispensable. If the reason for hormonal imbalance is discovered in time and gotten rid of, ovulation can be restored.

Fourth, You should know that if you take the Pill for a long time, your ability to get pregnant may seriously decrease after you are thirty. In this situation, if you wish to have a baby, it may take your body some time to restore its hormonal balance. Don’t get excited or be nervous about it…because restoration of the ovulation cycle may take from 2 to 10 months. Human bodies differ! Nobody can tell you how much time your own body will need in order to restore its ovulation cycle. Just relax, wait and see. Watch your diet, do physical exercises, assure reasonable rest and get ready for a healthy pregnancy.

Fifth, you may not be aware that, if you wish to get pregnant, your saliva can be your best advisor. After you are thirty, it is wise to check your ovulation daily. Full control of your ovulation cycle will help avoid unnecessary stress and taking medicines you don’t really need. A daily test of a drop of your saliva can give you the answer to your question, “When?” and will turn into a daily horoscope of your personal ovulation cycles. Our reusable product, MaybeMOM, can help you do this each day. You just place a drop of your saliva on the supplied slide first thing in the morning, allow it to dry, focus the provided mini-microscope, and look at the pattern. If it’s fern-like (matching a sample provided), ovulation is occurring. Be sure to read the instructions carefully, as well as the information about MaybeMOM provided in the package. MaybeMOM is the only saliva-based ovulation test of its kind to receive FDA clearance…and proven to be 98% accurate.

Your Guide to Getting Pregnant

by Cathy Campbell

Well, you've finally decided - yes you are going to have a baby - you are getting pregnant- right now! You stop using contraceptives and go for it with great enthusiasm!! You plan the season the baby will arrive in, choose names, start looking at all the cute little outfits and even decorate the nursery. Then … one month goes by, two months go by, three, six and even a year! Just because you have decided you want a baby does not mean that Mother Nature is always going to cooperate. And just because you have successfully managed to produce one child does not mean that you are going to easily create a second or third. That is what happened to me - I fell pregnant without even trying the first time! Then when my daughter was a couple of years old I "decided" I would have another baby….. one year later (!!!) after one early miscarriage and eventually using a ovulation predictor (I was actually ovulating towards the end of my cycle - not in the middle like everyone says you do) I fell pregnant and successfully produced a second daughter.

There is nothing worse than the feeling of not being able to get pregnant when you want to - all you see are mothers with babies, or big fat pregnant bellies while yours remains stubbornly empty. You wander aimlessly around the baby departments touching all the little outfits while you wonder why - why can't you get pregnant like everybody else.

There are things you can do to help the process. It may be as easy, as in my case as using an ovulation predictor and working out exactly when you are ovulating. Everybody's body is different - just because you are meant to ovulate in the middle of your cycle does not mean you actually do and the window of opportunity for conception to take place each month is very small! Is there anything else you can do to aid the process of conception??

10 ways to help you get pregnant:

1. Eat healthily - this - like a lot of this advice applies to you and your partner. The healthier you eat the more likely your body will have the correct nutrients to aid the fertilization of your egg.

2. Give up smoking - again this applies to both of you (if possible). Smoking affects the fertility of men and women, if you are having trouble conceiving - give it up!

3. Give up alcohol - same as smoking - this affects your fertility - you don't have to give up forever(!) just wait til after the baby has arrived (and finished breast feeding!!)

4. Try and maintain a healthy weight - being over weight or under weight can cause difficulties in conceiving a child.

5. Take a preconception vitamin & mineral supplement. These are available for men and women and include folic acid (for women) an essential ingredient to aid the development of a healthy fetus.

6. Calculate the exact time of ovulation. This can be done using charts or by using a proprietary ovulation predictor kit. Finding out when you ovulate is so important - all of your efforts may be being wasted if you are not timing things correctly.

7. This might be a hard one, but - try to RELAX - both of you! Trying to get pregnant, especially the longer it goes on can become very stressful. Try yoga or relaxation tapes to try and chill out - who hasn't heard of couples who are "unable" to have their own child, go ahead and adopt one and then when the pressure is off conceive naturally!

8. Cut down on caffeine (yeah - no smoking, no drinking and now no coffee!! But its all worth it in the end!!) Caffeine inhibits your absorption of iron one of the essentials for conception and healthy child producing.

9. Avoid using any sort of douche, vaginal spray or artificial lubricant. Many of these products dry up the cervical mucus and some can even kill off the sperm.

10. And here's for the guys if male infertility is a problem. Boxers rather than briefs stops the testicles from over heating which makes for healthier sperm. And no saunas or hot baths - you need to keep those swimmers cool!
